As we think about reopening the store I wanted to share a little bit about how we reached the decision to move forward. The first few days after the storm passed, we were just taking stock. Processing our feelings which still run the scope from disbelief and grief to gratitude and hope. During this time of taking it one day at a time, an old acquaintance checked on us. We don’t know him well, he doesn’t live in Asheville, and hadn’t previously been into the store or shopped on our site. The storm and news of devastation put us back on his radar, so he reached out.
His words to us felt like divine reassurance. He shared some encouragement that crystallized our determination to keep going. Among other kind words, he spoke about the extraordinary boldness it takes to create something like a business. How surely physical spaces are a manifestation of what is in one’s soul. It was a great reminder, perfectly timed and moved us to tears.
To be completely honest there have been moments (okay, full days) in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene when we didn’t know if we could or should continue. I’m sure you’ve seen the FEMA stats that 40% of small businesses do not survive after natural disasters like the one we’ve been through. When others have lost so much and there is so much suffering and devastation, how do we keep finding meaning in what we do, and is it even a worthwhile endeavor? These were the questions that were rolling around in our minds, and over breakfast chatter and late night whispers.
I’m sure our friend had no idea how impactful his encouragement would be but maybe it will be for you too, so I pass it along, and frame it this way:
If you’re a creator or artist, the best you can hope for is to have another person hold in their hand, or their ears, or any of their senses, a work which you created. If you’re able to offer someone any slice of what is in your heart and mind, it’s the biggest privilege. That transference is magic and I believe, one of the biggest reasons we are all here.
If you’re an artist trying to decide how they can keep creating right now, I hope you find the peace and inspiration to keep going. The only way out is through.
My art form is spaces. I’m a stylist, curator and designer. I create spaces and experiences, and with your support I’ve been able to do that at our store and with There There Interiors. Thank you for the privilege.
We will begin shipping again this weekend, October 19. Which also happens to be my birthday. We will reopen again for limited hours the following week. Let’s say 10/24 but we ask for grace on the hours and times. If you have ordered in stock items online during this time, expect to start seeing order updates with tracking shortly. In store pick up will also be available next week, around 10/24.
If you want to send a little extra love our way this weekend you can do that by shopping online or contributing to us directly via Venmo @therethereshop. Thank you to those of you who have done this already. We’re so grateful.
Meanwhile, we are working on stocking new art, custom goods, some clothing and fresh pieces that we hope will put a pep in your step this fall and holiday season.
If you keep showing up, we will too.
With love to all.
Take good care,
Mindy
